The capital city, Roseau, provides residents, especially foreigners, a lively, and convenient lifestyle in a safe, calm, and pristine environment, making it a hub for thousands of foreigners entering the country for various purposes such as to find work. However, landing a good job is quite challenging, especially for a foreigner living outside the territory. He or she must satisfy the requirements of the employer, and be highly skilled and qualified.ย Are you an expat looking for a job here? Are you planning to relocate to this country after landing a job? If yes, then here is a comprehensive article on finding work in Dominica as an expat and other things you need to know.ย

Types of jobs available to expats

Working an eight-hour day in an office is the conventional model of employment to which most of us are used. On the other hand, there are currently an overwhelming number of choices. There are many other kinds of job opportunities available, such as working from home, full-time, part-time, hybrid, internship, contract-based, freelance, seasonal, etc. jobs. These are available for candidates for the open position to select from.

Finding work as a foreigner

There are work opportunities for everyone looking to find employment here, thanks to the countryโ€™s local and international corporations, factories, etc. There are job openings in its booming sectors including tourism, education, manufacturing, and logistics, amongst others. Foreigners looking for employment can find posted opportunities on social media, job-networking apps like LinkedIn, recruitment sites such as Indeed, job portals of recruiting organizations, newspapers, etc. With these means, foreign persons can see job vacancies online, and sort them based on their fields of interest, level, and qualifications.  They can also try the usual style of networking and recommendation by close relatives or friends. Not that only skilled expatriates that meet the requirements of the positions applied to are generally employed.

Work requirements for expats

The small country is open to investments from foreigners and business incorporations. However, it offers work opportunities for foreigners. They are only a few slots available, resulting in the demand for high skills and experience.  For foreigners without a degree, there are seasonal jobs in the tourism sector, which do not require much qualification. Expats who do not mind the low pay can opt for volunteering jobs.

Language skill

The official language spoken by a majority of the people is English/French-creole. Expats who speak English to an extent have a higher chance of getting the job they apply for. As spoken English is pertinent here, most foreigners with TEFL certificates are greatly hired to be English teachers in private schools. The essence of speaking these languages is for foreigners to relate better with local citizens around them especially those in rural areas.

Work visa/permit

Not all expats need a work visa to gain entry into the country. A work visa is usually granted by the embassy to a new employee of any domestic company operating within its territory. The employer must apply for a work permit on the employeeโ€™s behalf, which shall be issued upon the arrival of the employee. Expats residing here on a different kind of visa may apply for a work permit themselves. This is valid for the period stated and must be renewed after expiring.
